Kyiv Mayor Cites Russian Shelling as Reason for Cancelling Munich Visit

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, has cancelled his visit to the international security conference in Munich due to Russia’s ongoing shelling of the city. Klitschko stated that he will stay in Kyiv to focus on restoring the city and addressing the challenges caused by the attacks.

In recent years, Klitschko had attended the Munich Security Conference to discuss key global issues, including Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. However, this year’s visit has been put on hold due to the urgent need to repair homes left without heat supply after Russian shelling.

As of now, 700 houses in Kyiv are without heat supply, and public utilities are working around the clock to restore water, heat, and light to residents. Despite government support, including help from state-owned enterprises and rescue teams, the process is being hindered by pressure from security forces.

Klitschko expressed frustration that politics may be at play in the central government’s handling of the crisis, with many utility workers facing criminal charges for their efforts to restore basic services. With 1,600 cases already filed against Kyiv’s utilities, only a handful have seen justice, leaving residents concerned about the impact on daily life.

Klitschko emphasized that he will continue to work tirelessly in Kyiv to address the city’s needs, despite the challenges posed by Russia’s aggression and the bureaucratic hurdles facing utility workers.
