The mayors of America’s largest cities have issued a joint statement, uniting to demand immediate reform and an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) unchecked operations in their communities. They join forces with Democratic Leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, calling for a comprehensive 10-point framework to be implemented.
The mayors argue that public safety depends on trust between residents and law enforcement, but when federal agents operate without identification, warrants, or accountability, this trust is shattered. The coalition cites examples from cities like Minneapolis, Portland, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Denver, where they have witnessed excessive force, arbitrary detentions, and violations of constitutional rights.
The mayors demand that Congress adopt the 10-point framework, which includes measures to stop violent tactics, increase transparency with body-worn cameras, and preserve the authority of state and local jurisdictions. They emphasize that anonymity and impunity are not tools of law enforcement in a free republic, but rather those of a police state.
The coalition urges Speaker Johnson and Leader Thune to accept these necessary guardrails before the February 13th funding deadline, urging Congress to hold the line against blank checks without reform.
