Renowned author Adam Mars-Jones has witnessed his work gain significant attention with the release of the queer BDSM romance film “Pillion.” The film, which is an adaptation of Mars-Jones’ 2015 novel “Box Hill,” tells the story of a young man named Colin who becomes involved in a BDSM relationship.
Mars-Jones discussed the film’s reception and his experience working on the project. He revealed that the film received an eight-minute standing ovation at Cannes, with many straight audience members laughing along with the rest. The author explained that he had little to do with the shaping of the film, but was pleased with how it turned out.
The author noted that the film deviates from the book in significant ways, including the characters’ names and the ending. Mars-Jones acknowledged that these changes may alter the audience’s interpretation of the story. He also discussed his writing style and the use of first-person narrators who are often in a weak position in society.
Despite the changes made for the film adaptation, Mars-Jones is thrilled with the renewed interest in his work. The book “Box Hill” has been selling out on Amazon and being translated into French and Korean. Mars-Jones’ novel “Monopolies of Loss,” an anthology of AIDS short stories, earned him a spot on Granta’s Best of British Young Novelists list twice.
Mars-Jones reflected on his own celebrity status, stating that he feels like a pillar of LGBTQ society in Britain but does not consider himself a celebrity. He is 71 and has been writing for many years, with a distinct style characterized by cleverness and a focus on exploring power dynamics.
