Black Homeownership Rate Remains Low Despite Progress on Civil Rights

The US still struggles with systemic barriers to homeownership for Black Americans. A recent report by LendingTree shows that 43.6% of Black households own homes, compared to 70.3% for White households. This gap persists despite the passage of landmark civil rights legislation like the Fair Housing Act in 1968. Historically, discriminatory lending practices and appraisal bias have prevented Black families from accumulating wealth through homeownership. The path forward requires acknowledging this history and demanding fair appraisals, equal pay, and non-discriminatory lending practices to close the wealth gap.
