A powerful storm is intensifying off the Mid-Atlantic coast, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to a vast area of the country. The storm will make landfall overnight Sunday and through Monday, with over 65 million people under alerts or warnings due to its severity.
The worst-hit areas are expected to receive more than a foot of snow, with localized totals reaching up to 2 feet in some places. The National Weather Service has described it as “potentially historic and destructive,” and New York City has declared a state of emergency with a citywide travel ban in effect until Monday morning.
Residents are advised to take precautions due to whiteout conditions and strong winds, which will make travel extremely hazardous. Essential workers will be exempt from the travel ban, but everyone is urged to stay safe and have a winter survival kit on hand if they must venture out.
The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and coastal flooding to areas such as New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia, with winds gusting up to 70 mph. After the nor’easter passes, more storms are forecast for the Northeast this week.
