The Beatles’ music was a reflection of their experiences with different cultures. In India, they incorporated sitars into their music, while George Harrison’s solo work combined “Hallelujah” and “Hare Krishna.” John Lennon famously criticized the establishment in his song “Imagine,” which dreamt of a world beyond nationalism and religion.
Rubio’s emphasis on cultural “greatness” is misguided. The Beatles’ message was not about preserving Western identity, but rather about breaking down barriers and promoting love and inclusivity. This approach is essential to understanding Western culture, which has always been synthetic and dynamic.
In contrast, Trumpian nationalism ignores the syncretic dynamism of Western culture. Rubio’s celebration of Western colonialism only perpetuates a narrow conception of Western identity. The true heart of the West lies in its compassionate, inclusive, and universalist spirit.
The Beatles’ legacy serves as a reminder that progress is achieved through critique and cultural innovation, not retrenchment. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, we can learn from history and make meaningful change.
