SK hynix has invested approximately 21.6 trillion KRW (around $15 billion) in building a new facility for its first semiconductor fab and constructing five cleanrooms by the end of December 2030. This investment is part of the company’s plan to expand production capacity and strengthen supply system stability ahead of growing global demand.
The new facility, located in Yongin, South Korea, will have a total floor area of six cleanrooms and two building shells. The first cleanroom is expected to open earlier than planned, from May 2027, to better respond to customer needs. This move aims to enhance the company’s responsiveness to market demand and strengthen its leadership in the global semiconductor industry.
The investment is part of SK hynix’s strategy to keep pace with the growth of advanced industries such as AI, data centers, and high-performance computing. The company plans to accelerate technology advancements and establish a stable supply system for customers when they require it. By doing so, SK hynix aims to position itself as a strategic base that will shape the future competitiveness of South Korea’s semiconductor industry.
The investment will also contribute to the expansion of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, which is expected to increase significantly compared to previous levels. The cluster will serve as a catalyst for accelerating the establishment of a mutually beneficial ecosystem with partner companies, generating synergies and shared growth opportunities.
