Wyatt Russell Opens Up About Monarch’s ‘Human Emotion’

Wyatt Russell, who plays Col. Lee Shaw in the sci-fi series Monarch, believes that AI has limitations when it comes to creating emotional elements in storytelling. He thinks this is why his show focuses on human relationships and how they affect the future.

In the 1950s sequences, Wyatt’s character protects Monarch’s founders from giant monsters called Titans. In the ’60s, he travels to a realm beneath the earth where time moves slowly. Today, Col. Shaw works to protect the world from monsters in 2017, even if he doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with leadership.

Wyatt says that mirroring his father’s mannerisms comes naturally, but makeup and wardrobe departments also work hard to make him look like his character. He notes that when they’re side-by-side, you notice more differences than similarities between the older and younger versions of Lee Shaw.

The spin-off series begins filming this spring, following Col. Shaw as he tracks Titans during the Cold War era. Wyatt looks forward to learning more about his character’s experiences, including the creatures he’s encountered.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 premieres on Apple TV on February 27. Future episodes will be released on Fridays through May 1.
