Actor Tom Hardy has made a generous offer to pay the wages of dozens of set builders who were left out of pocket by a construction company working on his upcoming TV series, Fixer. The production team had been unable to make payment in time for Christmas, leaving around 50 freelance workers without their £250,000 wages.
Hardy, who recently filmed scenes for Ritchie’s forthcoming gangster drama series, stepped in and offered to pay the workers’ wages until Paramount resolved the situation. A source close to Tom told The Times that Hardy was willing to help but that the production team had already sorted out a payment plan with the company.
The situation came to light after Helix 3D, the construction company behind the Fixer series, warned its staff that it would be unable to pay wages before Christmas. The company’s chief executive said that it was unlikely to pay staff on time due to serious financial troubles.
Bectu, the broadcasting union representing workers in the industry, expressed outrage over the situation and called for transparency and respect towards employees. Chris Hudson, organizing official for Bectu, wrote a letter to Helix 3D’s chief executive, saying that the company’s lack of foresight and information was unacceptable.
The Fixer series will star Tom Hardy alongside Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
