Scientists have discovered that nearly all Americans with certain health conditions may be at increased risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. A study using electronic health records found a link between 70 different pre-existing conditions and the development of Alzheimer’s.
The researchers identified four categories of conditions: mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, neurological conditions like sleep disorders and circulatory issues like high blood pressure, and metabolic conditions such as diabetes. These conditions are thought to cause inflammation, disrupt brain function, and lead to the formation of toxic plaques that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease.
The study suggests that detecting these conditions earlier in life could help prevent or slow Alzheimer’s disease in old age. By identifying patterns in medical records, researchers believe they can unlock new opportunities for risk reduction, early intervention, and improved patient outcomes.
