The European Central Bank suggests that companies with wide AI deployments are more likely to be hiring than those that don’t. Despite 1,110 reported AI-driven layoffs in 2025, the bank found no significant difference between businesses using AI and those that don’t when it comes to job creation and destruction. Instead, firms that use AI for research and development and innovation tend to grow their workforce. However, there are concerns about “AI washing,” where companies use AI as a scapegoat to excuse poor business decisions. The report concludes that if AI-related productivity boons were helping companies, they’d be building headcounts, not contracting them.
