Dan Simmons, Prolific Sci-Fi Author, Dies at 77

Award-winning author Dan Simmons has passed away at the age of 77. A renowned science fiction writer, Simmons is best known for his novel “Hyperion”, which won the prestigious Hugo award in 1989. He also wrote several sequels to the book and had two World Fantasy awards, a dozen Locus awards, and several Bram Stoker awards under his belt.

Born in Illinois in 1948, Simmons grew up in the Midwest and worked as an elementary school teacher for 18 years before becoming a full-time writer. His first novel, “Song of Kali”, was published in 1985, followed by other notable works like “Carrion Comfort” and “Summer of Night”. Simmons’s writing spanned multiple genres, including horror, science fiction, and politics.

Despite criticism for his 2011 book “Flashback”, which was seen as an anti-left rant, Simmons maintained that he wrote about issues close to his heart. He emphasized his dedication to civil rights and his willingness to write about topics he cared deeply about.

Throughout his career, Simmons defied literary norms by writing across genres and switching between major publishers. His love for storytelling and connection with readers defined him as a writer who was “a profoundly curious learner”.
