China’s Mineral Ban Threatens US Military Readiness

China’s ban on critical minerals will significantly impact the US military, with over 20,000 weapons parts at risk. The affected parts include nuclear missiles and various naval systems.

The analysis reveals that antimony is required for 6,335 parts, gallium for 11,351, and germanium for 12,777. Despite the US having stockpiles of these minerals, ensuring the military’s readiness and sustainment over a prolonged period will require precise planning.

To mitigate the risks, the Department of Defence must be able to map supply chains and anticipate demand for specific weapons systems. This will enable them to effectively manage the impact of the export controls imposed by China.
