Breakthrough Discovery Links ALS Protein to Cancer and Dementia

Scientists at Houston Methodist have discovered a protein tied to neurodegenerative conditions like dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also plays a critical role in DNA repair. The protein, TDP43, regulates genes that fix DNA errors but can harm neurons when its levels become imbalanced. This imbalance is linked to increased mutation rates in cancer, suggesting a new connection between neurodegeneration and cancer biology.
