As someone approaching 60, I reflect on my passion for coding. I used to enjoy it every day, but AI has changed that. While others have found their passion re-ignited, I think it depends on what you love – the journey or the destination.
I’ve always enjoyed the journey of coding, not just the end result. I find joy in puzzle-solving and organizing code. In contrast, my coworkers seem to be more focused on meeting business needs than enjoying the process. They get defensive about code reviews and can’t handle delays.
Forcing me to use Claude at work has taken away all enjoyment. Now, I’m dealing with a digital junior dev that doesn’t learn from its mistakes and lies frequently. This experience has made me realize that AI has shifted our focus towards destinations over journeys, but it’s not necessarily better or worse – just different.
