OpenAI Acquires Astral for AI-Powered Coding Tools Expansion

OpenAI has entered into an agreement to acquire Astral, the company behind popular open-source Python development tools such as uv, Ruff, and ty. The deal will help OpenAI accelerate its work on Codex, expanding what AI can do across the software development lifecycle.

Astral’s most popular projects include a Rust-based Python package manager (126 million monthly downloads), a Python linter and code formatter (179 million monthly downloads), and a fast Python type-checker (19 million monthly downloads).

The acquisition will enable AI agents to work more closely with developer tools, and OpenAI has promised to continue supporting Astral’s open-source projects after the deal closes. The company will maintain its community-driven approach and explore ways to integrate these tools with Codex.

This move comes as part of an intense battle between Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code for dominance in AI-powered coding assistants. OpenAI’s acquisition of Promptfoo, another open-source security tool focused on LLMs, also highlights the company’s commitment to expanding its capabilities in this area.
