WTHR TV Station Sale Expected Amid Antitrust Concerns

A major media deal between Nexstar Media Group and TEGNA is set to finalize the sale of WTHR, a prominent Indianapolis TV station. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the $3.54 billion acquisition, which must be completed within two years.

Nexstar will divest six stations, including WTHR, as part of the deal valued at $6.2 billion. This move is expected to reduce competition in the market and raise concerns about prices for consumers.

The deal has already sparked controversy, with eight US states filing a lawsuit against Nexstar and TEGNA over antitrust issues. DirecTV has also joined the lawsuit, citing potential harm to competition.

This acquisition follows an August announcement that Nexstar acquired TEGNA, expanding its portfolio of news stations from 200 to 64. The final terms of the deal and its impact on WTHR’s operations remain unclear.
