GrapheneOS Stands Firm Against Age Verification Laws

GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused Android fork, refuses to implement age verification laws for its operating system. The company, developed by the GrapheneOS Foundation, a registered Canadian nonprofit, stated that it will not collect user age data at setup and will remain available internationally. This decision comes as emerging laws in Brazil and California require operating systems to collect user age data during account setup. Despite concerns from critics, including over 400 computer scientists, who argue that these laws create surveillance infrastructure without protecting children, GrapheneOS remains committed to its stance. The company’s refusal to comply with the laws may lead to restrictions on sales in certain regions or geographic locations.
