Smithsonian Unveils “Our Shared Future” Programming for 250th Anniversary

The Smithsonian Institution has unveiled its new “Our Shared Future” programming to celebrate America’s 250th birthday this year. The series of events and exhibitions is part of the museum network’s “Our Shared Future: 250” title, which aims to reminisce about the nation’s founding and look forward to the future.

According to Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch, the programming will engage communities across the country to explore the history that connects us and the future we share. The events include a celebration of American heritage, such as folklife and bison, as well as exhibitions on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, important American women, and U.S. postage stamps.

The Smithsonian will also host a four-day event marking the summer solstice on June 21, known as Solstice Saturday, which is typically held in Washington, D.C. The iconic 19th-century Smithsonian Castle will temporarily reopen from May 22 to September 7, allowing visitors to tour the building for the first time since February 2023.

The White House launched a review of the group’s plans months ago, but no further information has been released on the status of the review.
