OpenAI Shifts ChatGPT’s Focus Away from E-Commerce

OpenAI is changing its approach to e-commerce on ChatGPT. The company had launched a feature called “Instant Checkout” last year, which allowed users to buy items directly from the chatbot’s interface. However, it didn’t gain much traction.

The new plan is for merchants to create their own apps within ChatGPT, routing users to their websites for checkout. Instead of transforming ChatGPT into a shopping portal, OpenAI aims to make the chatbot a research tool that helps consumers decide on a product.

To achieve this, ChatGPT will focus on providing detailed information about products, such as side-by-side pictures and comparative metrics like prices, features, and reviews. This shift in focus will allow users to make more informed purchasing decisions.
