A New Mexico jury has ruled that Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is liable for failing to protect young users from online dangers. The verdict holds Meta responsible for allowing sexually explicit content, solicitation, and human trafficking on its platforms.
The jury found Meta misled consumers about the safety of its services, putting children at risk. As a result, the court ordered a maximum penalty of $375 million in civil penalties, which is significantly lower than Meta’s quarterly revenue of $6 billion.
