NASA Detects Atmospheric Waves Triggered By Hurricanes

A powerful hurricane like Helene can have a significant impact on the atmosphere, even at high altitudes. According to NASA, their instruments detected a previously unknown phenomenon – atmospheric waves – surging through the air 55 miles above the planet’s surface. This observation gives new insights into how severe weather events affect the upper atmosphere and provides valuable data for improving satellite technology and communication systems. The equipment used, AWE, is installed outside the International Space Station and can track subtle patterns in the atmosphere that might ripple upward into the mesosphere.
