25 Iconic Films Added to National Film Registry

The National Film Preservation Board has announced the addition of 25 iconic films to the National Film Registry, bringing the total number of films on the list to 900. The new class includes classic movies from various genres and decades, such as “Spy Kids,” “Social Network,” and horror staple “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

The registry, which honors films for their cultural, historic, or aesthetic importance, features a diverse range of titles that showcase American film history. Films like “When Harry Met Sally” and “Ghostbusters” are among the many classics already on the list.

This year’s selection process involved careful consideration of over 6,700 titles, with the final 25 chosen to join the registry. The National Film Preservation Board Chair, Jacqueline Stewart, notes that selecting films is a challenging task, requiring research, conversation, and discussion to ensure that only the most significant and diverse films are included.

A TV special honoring the new additions will air on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on December 18 at 8 p.m. ET, giving audiences a chance to celebrate these cinematic treasures.
