Waymo Doubles Weekly Driverless Ride Count to 500,000

Waymo has achieved a significant milestone by handling 500,000 driverless rides per week across the US. This represents a doubling of its weekly ridership in under a year, from 250,000 rides last April. The company’s expansion into new markets has contributed to this growth, with recent additions including Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando.

Despite rival companies like Zoox trying to catch up, Waymo is still moving ahead at a faster pace. The company has big plans on the horizon, including integrating Zeekr vans and Hyundai Ioniq 5s into its fleet and expanding to 21 new cities by the end of the year. Its goal is to reach 1 million rides per week by then.

However, Waymo now faces another challenge: scaling up safely in more cities with different traffic environments and weather conditions. The company’s co-CEO has stated that this will be a key focus as it continues to grow its autonomous vehicle business.
