FCC Ban on Foreign Wi-Fi Routers Hits Top US Brands

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ban on foreign-made Wi-Fi routers will affect top manufacturers, including Amazon’s Eero and Netgear. According to a report by Speedtest.net, which analyzed user-submitted data from January 2025 to last month, the top 10 US Wi-Fi router vendors are:

1. Eero (Amazon-owned)
2. TP-Link (Chinese-affiliated brand, but in second place due to low usage)
3. Netgear
4. Arcadyan (Taiwanese brand with ties to Verizon and Compal)
5. Askey (Asus-owned Taiwanese brand)

The FCC ban prohibits the sale of new foreign-made Wi-Fi routers to consumers, while allowing software updates for existing devices until March 1, 2027. The move aims to mitigate security risks from foreign-manufactured routers, but has sparked concerns about increased costs and market disruption.

Experts say that many US customers are still using outdated wireless standards, with around 28% of speed test samples running on Wi-Fi 5 and 7% on older Wi-Fi 4. The FCC’s ban is seen as a necessary precaution to protect consumers from potential security threats, but its impact on the market remains unclear.
