My husband’s family and I often invite people who aren’t related by blood or marriage to our celebrations. We have a tradition where one person gets mistakenly invited, but still responds with excitement and warmth. His name is Benjamin, but to us, he’s “The Wrong Benny”.
This friendly phenomenon started over 10 years ago when my sister-in-law accidentally sent an invitation to the wrong Benjamin in Germany. The reply was filled with joy and hospitality, setting the tone for future interactions. Despite repeated mistakes, we kept inviting him, and he always responded enthusiastically.
However, our accidental emails stopped when I invited everyone to a Botanical Gardens celebration in 2018, again mistakenly sending it to “The Wrong Benny”. But years later, someone still used his address, leading me to wonder if he’d ever visit.
I’ve decided to share the story of “The Wrong Benny” with all of you, as it’s a testament to the power of connection and coincidence. What I find fascinating is how we were able to form a friendship despite never meeting or sharing common ground.
In today’s world, where feelings of disconnection are prevalent, this story brings me joy. It reminds me that sometimes our lives intersect in unexpected ways, and these encounters can be truly life-changing.
