Astronauts Share First Views of Lunar Far Side

The Artemis II mission has released stunning new photos of the moon and the Orion spacecraft, offering a glimpse into life in space for the astronauts. The images showcase the Orientale basin, a region that has only been seen by robotic imagers before. NASA astronaut Christina Koch described the view as “absolutely spectacular.” As the crew approaches the moon, they are shifting their focus from Earth to the lunar surface.

The crew is more than halfway to the moon and will soon conduct a historic lunar flyby on Monday. The images have shown that the moon appears larger through the spacecraft’s windows as the journey continues. The astronauts have also shared candid glimpses of life in space through live camera feeds.

A new photo shows Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen looking out of the Orion spacecraft, with most lights turned off to avoid glare. The spacecraft is equipped with cameras for high-resolution selfies, including ones with the moon or Earth. This mission marks a historic milestone for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send humans into deep space for the first time in over five decades.
