Two men from east London and Walsall have pleaded guilty to a massive cyber attack that disrupted Transport for London (TfL) services for three months, causing £39m in damages. Thalha Jubair and Owen Flowers admitted to charges of conspiring to commit unauthorized acts against TfL under the Computer Misuse Act. The pair also pleaded guilty to hacking other US companies’ computer systems.
The cyber attack affected 10 million customers and impacted TfL’s online services, leaving some unable to see information boards or access their Oyster refund systems. Investigators from the National Crime Agency (NCA) linked the attack to a notorious online criminal group called Scattered Spider, which has been involved in other high-profile cyber attacks.
Following the guilty pleas, the NCA said both men were arrested and seized laptops, desktop computers, and USB devices containing evidence of their involvement. The pair will be sentenced on July 15th.
