US Must Unite AI Efforts to Stay Ahead in Cybersecurity

The United States’ approach to advanced artificial intelligence (AI) is causing uncertainty in the global cybersecurity market. Recent restrictions on AI models are undermining critical U.S. cybersecurity outcomes and putting the country at risk of missing out on a generational opportunity to improve national cyber defenses.

To regain its credibility, the U.S. government needs a coherent strategy that works with private sector companies, stays ahead of adversaries, keeps allies on board, and maintains trust in the U.S. AI stack. This requires transparency, open-source software, bug-bounty programs, and controlled access programs like Project Glasswing.

The administration’s post-Mythos strategy centered on using AI to fix software vulnerabilities before adversaries acquire similar capabilities. However, recent developments have caused widespread uncertainty, and restrictions on Anthropic’s models are now causing harm. The U.S. government should provide targeted funding and facilitate cross-lab coordination to ensure access to defensive tools.

A unified approach is necessary to accelerate allied access and maintain the country’s position as a leader in AI cybersecurity. Without a coherent strategy, Washington risks closing the cybersecurity window of opportunity that it hopes to keep open.
