Apple has dropped support for its Time Capsule series routers, which can no longer create Time Machine backups due to a protocol change in macOS 27. However, developer James Chang has created an open-source project called TimeCapsuleSMB that brings SMBv3 support to the devices via Python or a GUI app.
The new project allows users to mount their Time Capsule devices using an SMB URL in the Finder, eliminating reliance on Apple’s legacy stack. The project is available for download from GitHub and provides detailed instructions on how to activate it on older devices running NetBSD 4.
This hack is a logical solution to the issue, as Apple has been using Samba (SMB) as its standard protocol for many years. With the update, support for traditional Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) was also removed from the system.
