Oregon Fireworks Rules for a Safe 4th of July

Fireworks will light up the night sky on the 4th of July, but remember to follow the rules to avoid fines and injuries. In Oregon, people can now buy fireworks through Monday, July 6, but there are limits on when they can be used.

Some fireworks are allowed: novelty devices, wheels, flitter sparklers, fountains, smoke devices, and ground spinners. However, personal fireworks like bottle rockets, Roman candles, and firecrackers need a permit to use. The maximum fine for breaking these rules is $2,500.

Cities have their own restrictions. In Clatsop County, possession and discharge of aerial or mortar-style fireworks are common offenses. Astoria’s police department received 11 calls about illegal fireworks in 2025, but no one was cited. Seaside’s city council increased penalties for illegal fireworks use to a minimum fine of $1,000.

Burns from fireworks are the most common July 4 injuries. To avoid them, supervise kids and be careful where you set off fireworks. If there’s an injury or fire, call 911. For less urgent matters, contact local law enforcement.

Many pets can be traumatized by fireworks. Keep your pets safe with these tips: update their identification tags, take a photo, consult with your vet about medication, secure your yard, and keep them indoors during parties and fireworks. Always supervise your pets and make sure they’re escape-proof.
