NASA astronauts Chris Williams and Jessica Meir will embark on a crucial spacewalk to replace a malfunctioning wrist joint on the International Space Station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm. The mission, scheduled for June 30, aims to fix the issue that occurred on May 27, which caused the arm to draw excessive motor current and fail to move as expected.
The spacewalk is expected to last around six-and-a-half hours and will mark Williams’ second spacewalk, while Meir’s fifth. The joint replacement procedure was deemed necessary by NASA and CSA, working together to identify the issue and develop a solution.
Experts will preview the mission during a news conference on June 25, providing insight into the upcoming spacewalk and its significance for the station’s continued operations. Media interested in attending can contact the Johnson newsroom for more information.
