Polygamous Sect Leader Convicted on Child Abuse Charges

A polygamous sect leader already serving a 50-year prison sentence was convicted Friday on state child abuse charges. Samuel Bateman, who was found with three girls aged 11-14 in an unventilated trailer in Arizona, was accused of coercing young girls into sex acts. He claimed to have over 20 “spiritual wives” under the age of 18 and testified he would never harm his loved ones. The jury delivered the verdict after just 40 minutes, convicting him on all three counts of child abuse, with sentences ranging from four to eight years each.
