Mamdani’s Candidates Swept NY Democratic Primary

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani-backed candidates have won three out of four seats in the city’s Democratic primary elections, according to the results. The clean sweep came after candidates endorsed by Mamdani defeated their pro-Israel opponents.

Two of the winners are Assemblywoman Claire Valdez and Drarializa Avila Chevalier, who ran for the 7th and 13th districts respectively. They both accused Israel of genocide during the campaign.

The other winner is Brad Lander, a progressive challenger in the 10th congressional district. He easily beat incumbent US congressman Dan Goldman by 65.7% to 34.1%. Mamdani praised Lander for his “vision of politics that is more than what we’ve seen for so long”.

Mamdani’s endorsement successes have been seen as a test of his political influence, but establishment Democrats in Washington are warning that left-wing candidates might not appeal to swing voters in November’s midterm elections.
