Google Brings Gmail-Like Categories to Android 16 for Smarter Notifications

Google is developing two major features to improve Android’s notification management: Notification Cooldown and Gmail-like categories. The former aims to reduce repeated notifications, while the latter will organize notifications into relevant groups.

In a recent Android 15 QPR2 beta release, a hidden Bundled notifications settings page was discovered, allowing users to group similar notifications together under categories like Promotions, News, Social, and Recommendations. This feature is still under development but has the potential to make life easier for those receiving hundreds of unwanted notifications daily.

Notification bundling will take precedence over app notification settings, and it’s disabled by default. To enable it, go to Settings > Notifications. Android 16 may also introduce Notification Cooldown, which will silence repeated notifications from the same sender or app. These improvements aim to enhance Android’s notification panel, allowing users to quickly respond to messages, check emails, and glance at food delivery status without opening any apps.

Google is continually working on refining its Android experience, and with Android 16, we can expect even more streamlined notification management.
