Democratic Socialists See Momentum After Historic Wins

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has seen a surge in momentum after historic wins in the US Congress and mayoral elections. The organization’s message of progressive policies and social justice is resonating with voters, particularly young people.

Last month, hundreds of DSA members attended an event in Brooklyn where leaders urged them to avoid complacency and continue to contest for power. Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the city’s DSA chapter, stated that electing a few charismatic leaders was not enough; they need to transform the world.

In recent months, the DSA has produced a production line of victorious candidates in New York, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and Colorado. The momentum is unlike anything seen before on the US left.

The organization’s growth is significant, with over 200 local chapters, 20 with more than 1,000 members, and over 100,000 members nationwide. Growth has been notable in the south and midwest.

DSA co-founder Maurice Isserman reflected that the organization’s goal is to be “the left wing of the possible.” The recent wins demonstrate that the chapter “has indeed become the left wing of the possible,” he said.

With primaries in full swing, several races will test how widely the DSA’s message resonates and its organizing prowess. In Missouri, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Democratic Socialists are running for seats, including a gubernatorial contest in Wisconsin.

Despite establishment opposition, DSA leaders are considering supporting a democratic socialist candidate for the 2028 presidential election. Some have become vocal about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

The organization remains committed to its values, despite criticism from some on the left and right. “What’s a party if not its voters?” said Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first immigrant, Muslim, and DSA member mayor.
