Alphabet’s self-driving arm Waymo has announced plans to bring its robotaxis to Tokyo, Japan starting early next year. In partnership with Nihon Kotsu, the city’s largest taxi company, Waymo will test its self-driving Jaguar I-Pace units in select areas of Tokyo.
The launch marks the first time Waymo’s robotaxis have operated outside of the US, following a series of expansion and launches in paid driverless ride-hailing services. To begin, vehicles will be operated manually to map out specific areas, with Nihon Kotsu responsible for managing and servicing the units.
Waymo is working closely with the taxi firm to train their team on operating autonomous vehicles. The company’s driver will need to adapt to Japan’s unique driving habits and left-hand traffic.
This expansion into Japan aligns with the country’s vision for future transportation, with Waymo collaborating with government officials to ensure a responsible implementation of its technology.
