A recent detection of bird flu at an Ottawa County poultry facility in Michigan indicates that the disease is still present in some areas of the state. According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the risk to public health remains low. However, steps are being taken to prevent further spread.
The affected premises has been quarantined, and all birds will be depopulated to contain the outbreak. Farmers are also advised to use personal protective equipment when handling infected animals to minimize transmission to humans. Domestic animals should be kept away from wild birds, and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between uses.
Residents with poultry or eggs in their homes are reminded to handle and cook them properly to prevent contamination. The state veterinarian recommends following proper hygiene practices and seeking advice on the MDARD website for more information.
