BBC Studios and Walt Disney Company have announced a partnership to produce an animated movie featuring Bluey, the popular children’s television character. The film will be made by Ludo, the Australian studio behind the “Bluey” series, with BBC Studios financing and distributing it globally.
Disney+ and cable networks already license the series, but this new project will be released in theaters in 2027. Joe Brumm, Bluey’s creator, will write and direct the film, with original voice actors reprising their roles. Production will be handled by Amber Naismith, known for her work on “The Lego Movie” and “Happy Feet”.
This partnership marks a significant move for Disney, which rarely releases animated movies it does not own. The recent success of Bluey has led to a staggering 50 billion minutes streamed in the US alone in 2024, making it the No. 1 streaming show.
While this news may come as a surprise given Brumm’s announcement that he will “take a break” from the series, it is not an indication that the show will end. Rather, it highlights the character’s immense popularity and Disney’s desire to maintain its presence in the franchise.
