Mysterious Mastodon Jaw Uncovered in NYC Backyard

A remarkable discovery was made in an Orange County, New York resident’s backyard – a complete mastodon jaw that has not been found in the state in over 11 years. Researchers from the New York State Museum and SUNY Orange are now studying this unique find to gain insights into the ecology of this majestic species.

The jaw, which belongs to an adult mastodon, was discovered along with a toe bone fragment and a rib piece. These fossils provide valuable context for further research and may shed light on the diet and habitat of the mastodon during its lifetime.

According to Dr. Robert Feranec, director of Research & Collections at the New York State Museum, this discovery highlights the state’s rich paleontological history. The study of these fossils will help scientists better understand Ice Age ecosystems in the region.

The discovery is not the first of its kind in Orange County; over 150 mastodon fossils have been found statewide, with about a third discovered in the county. If you ever find similar discoveries, experts encourage you to report them to the authorities as they may hold significant historical value and inspire future generations of scientists.

In the coming years, the fossils will undergo carbon dating and analysis, followed by preservation and display in public programming in 2025.
