Amazon employees in Southern California have voted to authorize a strike, citing the company’s refusal to negotiate contracts and recognize their union. The Teamsters union, representing thousands of workers in Palmdale, San Bernardino, Victorville, and City of Industry, gave Amazon until December 15 to come to the bargaining table.
Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien accused Amazon executives of pushing workers “to the brink” due to the company’s prioritization of profits over worker safety. The union claims that Amazon has subjected its workforce to injury and abuse.
Amazon responded by denying the Teamsters’ claims, stating that they do not represent the company’s employees and drivers. The company also alleged that the Teamsters have engaged in intimidation and coercion tactics towards Amazon workers.
The strike follows a global movement, with UNI Global Union holding its fifth annual Black Friday to Cyber Monday strike last month. Thousands of Amazon workers from 20 countries participated in the strike, highlighting the growing concerns among Amazon employees worldwide.
The timing of the planned strike remains uncertain, but it marks another significant challenge for Amazon during the busy holiday delivery season.
