Amazon workers at four facilities in Southern California have authorized strikes after the company’s refusal to recognize their union, Teamsters. This comes as the corporation faces criticism over its treatment of workers, including low pay and unsafe working conditions.
The Teamsters represent thousands of workers across 10 Amazon facilities nationwide. In a statement, General President Sean M. O’Brien said that “greedy executives are pushing thousands of hardworking Americans to the brink.” The union is fighting for better wages, benefits, and control over their lives.
Amazon’s refusal to negotiate labor agreements with the Teamsters has led to a growing movement among workers to join the union. Drivers at facilities in Victorville and City of Industry say they will no longer be bullied into demanding their rights. A strike would have significant implications for customers, particularly during peak holiday season.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, represents 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The union’s leadership is calling on Amazon to recognize its workers’ right to organize and negotiate fair contracts.
