Speleologist Rescued from Italian Cave After 4-Day ordeal

A speleologist who suffered serious injuries while mapping an uncharted cave in Italy was rescued after a 75-hour operation. Ottavia Piana, 32, fell 15 feet and sustained a fractured face, ribs, and knees on Saturday. A team of over 150 experts used explosives to clear the way as they carefully extracted her from the Bueno Fonteno cave. The rescue was complicated by the cave’s unique morphology, which made it prone to landslides. This is not Piana’s first experience with the cave; she broke her leg there 17 months ago and was stuck for two days.
