A developer created a Windows XP mod without Internet Explorer’s core components.
The mod runs basic apps like Calculator successfully, but not those reliant on IE components. It gives a classic Windows feel with an NT 4.0 Explorer replacement.
Windows XP was highly rated when launched in 2001, but Microsoft faced criticism for deeply integrating Internet Explorer with the OS. This led to changes in later versions, such as Windows Vista in 2007.
To demonstrate the impact of IE’s integration, a developer created a Windows XP mod without IE’s core components. The mod can run apps that don’t rely heavily on those components, like Calculator and Paint, but not Media Player due to its reliance on IE components.
File management uses NT 4.0 Explorer instead of Windows XP Explorer, as the latter wouldn’t work properly without IE’s core components. The mod resembles classic Windows versions in many ways, with a similar taskbar and Start menu.
A YouTube video demonstrates what works and what doesn’t in the new Windows XP mod. Users can install the mod on a virtual machine or use third-party apps like Stardock’s WindowsBlinds 11 to customize their Windows PCs to resemble Windows XP.
