SpaceX launched a secretive rapid response mission for the US Space Force on Monday night, flying a GPS III satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. The effort, dubbed Rapid Response Trailblazer, aimed to demonstrate the ability to quickly plan and launch a mission in around six months – a process that normally takes around two years.
The Space Force successfully integrated an existing GPS III satellite from storage, accelerated integration and launch vehicle readiness, and rapidly processed for launch. The launch lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 7:52 p.m., with the first-stage booster landing on a drone ship after releasing the GPS payload.
This mission marks the first time the Space Force has launched a large National Security Space Launch-class payload using a commercial rocket. The successful launch demonstrates the ability to quickly deliver launches in support of future warfighter needs, according to Walt Lauderdale, mission director for Monday’s launch.
The GPS III satellite was built by Lockheed Martin and had been in storage awaiting a ride from United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket, which has faced delays and is not yet certified to fly national security missions. The decision to redirect the satellite to SpaceX came earlier this year.
