North Korean Troops Suffer Heavy Losses in Ukraine

North Korea has suffered significant losses as Russian-backed forces face off against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region. Videos have emerged showing North Korean soldiers storming Ukrainian trenches, while reports suggest Moscow is trying to hide the extent of casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared drone footage on Monday, which appears to show North Koreans taking shelter behind a tree after advancing on Ukrainian positions. He accused Russia of trying to “hide” growing casualty numbers and even burning the faces of dead North Korean soldiers.

A senior US military official confirmed that around 10,000 North Korean soldiers had entered the conflict, with hundreds suffering casualties. Ukraine’s military intelligence reported at least 30 North Koreans killed or injured in recent clashes.

These reports come as Russia and North Korea have strengthened ties since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The two leaders revived a mutual defence pledge in June, which has led to an escalation of troop deployments.

Videos have also emerged showing wounded North Korean soldiers in Russian hospitals, dressed in civilian clothes, in an apparent bid to conceal their involvement and casualty numbers. Despite this, Western allies have been slow to respond to the situation.

The language barrier between North Koreans and Russian troops is reportedly causing issues for command, with one incident allegedly resulting in eight Russian deaths after a communication breakdown.
