US Amazon Workers Threaten Strike Over Union Recognition

Amazon employees in the US are threatening to go on strike ahead of Christmas due to a dispute with the Teamsters union. The workers claim that Amazon has refused to recognize their union and ignore a deadline for talks over their contract.

The Teamsters, which represents thousands of Amazon facilities across 10 US locations, says it will take industrial action if its demands are not met. However, an Amazon spokesperson disputes this, stating that the union’s claims about worker representation are misleading.

A recent congressional investigation found that Amazon pushes its US warehouse workers to meet high speeds that could cause injuries, and that the company has refused to introduce safety changes due to concerns over profits. The investigation was led by Senator Bernie Sanders and reviewed 1,000 documents.

The dispute highlights ongoing concerns about working conditions at Amazon’s warehouses, which have been amplified during the Covid-19 pandemic. Founder Jeff Bezos acknowledged in 2023 that the company needed to do better for its employees. With Christmas approaching, workers are set to take action if their demands are not addressed.
