Europe Debates Sending Troops to Ukraine for Security

European nations are discussing sending troops to Ukraine as part of a potential security force to guarantee stability in the region following a ceasefire or peace deal. However, US President-elect Donald Trump has ruled out deploying American troops to support European efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron is pushing for talks on sending a security force, but some leaders fear this could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin. The debate is ongoing, with challenges including troop numbers, mandate, and contributors.

Key issues under consideration include the size of the potential force, ranging from tens of thousands to potentially 100,000 troops, depending on its precise mission. The European security official estimates that such a force would stretch military capabilities, as arms stocks have been depleted by donations to Ukraine.

The composition of the international force and its mandate are also being debated. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto suggests it should be under UN auspices, while other officials argue this could give Russia too much influence.

The Europeans would likely need to persuade the US to provide intelligence and operational support for any such mission. Critical issues include rules of engagement and what would happen if a European soldier is shot in combat.

Despite the challenges, some analysts believe a deterrence force could be formed by a coalition of five to eight nations, with the potential to deter further Russian attacks.
