Experts Say Forgetting is Natural, Not a Sign of Dementia

A leading neuroscientist suggests that forgetting is a natural process, not an early sign of dementia. Charan Ranganath, director of the Dynamic Memory Lab at the University of California at Davis, advises against Googling “signs of early dementia” when experiencing memory lapses. According to Ranganath, our brains are designed to forget most information to make room for new experiences. The average person processes over 74 gigabytes of information daily, making it a normal part of life to forget certain details.
