Disney has pulled the transgender storyline from its new animated series Win or Lose, citing concerns about discussing certain subjects with children at their parents’ terms. The decision comes after 14-year-old trans girl Chanel Stewart was cast to voice a transgender teenager in the show.
Stewart had expressed excitement about sharing her own journey and empowering other trans youth through her character. However, when Disney announced that they would no longer include the storyline, both Stewart and her mother Keisha were heartbroken.
“The thought of authentically portraying a transgender teenage girl made me really happy,” said Stewart. “I wanted to make this for transgender kids like me.”
Disney released a statement saying that they recognize many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline. However, Keisha countered that every person deserves representation and recognition, especially in a world where transgender teenagers face significant challenges.
Stewart will still be part of the show, but her character’s storyline has been altered to make her a cis girl. The series will begin rolling out on Disney+ starting February 19, 2025.
In response to the decision, some critics have argued that it’s ultimately up to parents to discuss sensitive topics with their children. However, experts emphasize the importance of inclusive representation in media, particularly for marginalized communities like trans youth.
